Only four actors will walk away from Sunday's Oscars ceremony with an Oscar statuette, but all 20 nominees will take home a six-figure prize.
For the 22nd year in a row, Los Angeles-based marketing firm Distinctive Assets is distributing jam-filled “Everybody Wins” goodie bags to the men and women recognized in the Oscars' top categories.
This year's portfolio — which is not affiliated with the Academy — is worth about $180,000, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It. It's filled with more than 50 gifts ranging in value from a $15 Rubik's Cube to an invitation to enjoy a $50,000 stay in a Swiss ski chalet.
In fact, calling it a “gift bag” might be a bit of an understatement.
“It rarely fits in one bag. We have a piece of Olympia luggage that's the largest duffel bag they make,” Distinctive Assets founder Lash Vari tells Make It. “And then it usually spreads to these eco-friendly bags.”
Some nominees have their bags delivered to their homes, while others provide their hotel information to premium assets so their bags are waiting to travel with them after the ceremony.
Although Distinctive Assets tries to deliver the bags in person while the stars are out in Hollywood, they have shipped them in the past. Postage alone for a package of this size and weight can cost up to $850.
But for Farey, whose gift bag has come to represent the end of awards season as much as the Oscars, it's a worthwhile expense.
“This is the end of the road for them,” he says. “They finally have a moment to sit back, browse through these fun portfolios and enjoy the spoils of their success.”
What's inside your 2024 Everyone Wins Gift Bag?
The most expensive gift in this year's bag is a three-night stay at Zermatt Peak Chalet, winner of the 'Best Ski Chalet' award from the World Ski Awards. Nominees who redeem the $50,000 invitation will receive private use of the entire chalet for themselves and up to nine guests.
The six-story chalet features floor-to-ceiling windows with Matterhorn views, a spa, an in-house massage therapist and a rooftop sky observatory. Guests can dine on multi-course dinners prepared by a gourmet chef, and have access to a fully stocked wine cellar as well as a chauffeured car available 24 hours a day.
Recipients will also receive an invitation to a seven-day stay at Golden Door Spa in Southern California. The $24,000 spa offers daily massages, farm-to-table meals, private hiking trails, and mindfulness and wellness classes.
But there's more than just invitations to luxury retreats in everyone's bag. These are just a few of the dozens of items included in the Everyone Wins Bag:
The Schwank portable grill is capable of heating up to 1500 degrees. The grill, which features top burners that use infrared technology, retails for $1,350. The $335 bag is “handcrafted by master craftsmen” from Canada-based Elboque. Helight red light therapy device for sleep that features a “patented scientifically designed 28-minute duration.” A protocol that reflects the natural cycle of jettison at the end of the day.” Each hockey puck-sized device retails for $139. Also included in this year's official Grammy gift bag, Oscar nominees receive a $25,000 live performance from psychologist Carl Christman which ” Combines magic, mind reading, hypnosis and comedy.” Anniversary Rubik's Cube features the puzzle's original logo and color scheme. Retails for $15. $515 Miage Skincare Luxury Five-Piece Gift Set. $10,000 Microneedling Treatment from Cynosure” Designed to tighten and revitalize the skin and reduce common signs of aging or reduce blemishes.
Who will get a swag bag this year?
The six-figure goodie bag is exclusively for the nominees in the Acting and Directing categories. Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel will also receive the Everybody Wins bag for the fourth time.
These are the 26 recipients of this year's goodie bag:
Host: Jimmy Kimmel – Best Director Nominees: Justin Tritt, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, Yorgos Lanthimos, Jonathan Glazer – Best Actor Nominees: Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti, Cillian Murphy, Jeffrey Wright – Best Actress Nominees: Annette Bening, Lily Gladstone, Sandra Holler. Carey Mulligan, Emma Stone – Best Supporting Actor nominees: Sterling K. Brown, Robert De Niro, Robert Downey Jr., Ryan Gosling, Mark Ruffalo. Nominees for Best Supporting Actress: Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks, America Ferrera, Jodie Foster, Daphne Joy Randolph.
And while there are only as many bags as there are nominees, Farey says he hopes to get one for “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, who did not receive a best director nomination for the year's highest-grossing film.
“There's usually one candidate every year who doesn't take it for whatever reason,” he says. “If there's one available, I'll make sure Greta gets one.”
What about taxes?
Although the Everybody Wins bag has an impressive maximum value, the merchandise in the bag itself is only worth $10,000. This value is considered taxable income, according to the IRS.
Everything else, such as invitations to go on luxury vacations, will not be subject to a tax penalty unless the recipients redeem them. For example, if they didn't make the trip to the ski chalet, the invitation would be worth $0. If they decide to go, they will have to pay taxes on the value of the trip.
“Usually one or two people make a trip a year,” says Farry. “It depends on whether or not it works with their shooting schedule and all that kind of stuff. A lot of stars have to align.”
