The Biden administration will announce measures Wednesday targeting Russian government-backed efforts to manipulate American opinion ahead of the 2024 election, two senior U.S. officials told NBC News.
The officials said the alleged efforts include using RT, a Russian-backed English-language media network, to influence American public opinion.
The Biden administration's actions in response to those efforts are expected to include sanctions by the U.S. Treasury Department and law enforcement actions by the Justice Department.
Attorney General Merrick Garland plans to speak publicly about the proceedings later Wednesday.
In July, US intelligence officials told NBC News that Russia was trying to undermine President Joe Biden's campaign for re-election this fall.
Weeks later, Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him at the top of the Democratic ticket.
Harris is scheduled to face Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump in November.
