Rivian Cars It redesigned the all-electric R1 models and SUVs to improve range, performance and computing power with assistance Nvidia The company said on Thursday.
While the 2025 models don't superficially look very different from current models, Rivian said it has changed more than half the hardware components for the second-generation products and re-engineered their batteries and electrical architecture, also known as the brains of the car. trolley.
“We are continuing to evolve our flagship R1 vehicles, delivering quality and performance without compromise,” RJ Scaringe, CEO and founder of Rivian, said in a statement. “Our revamped R1S and R1T push the technical boundaries even further, creating our most capable products yet.”
One of the most notable changes that have occurred in the new vehicles is their computing power, which Rivian says provides ten times more performance than the previous system.
The new system uses dual Nvidia DRIVE Orin processors to help power the “autonomous computing unit,” which includes driver assistant features. A “premium version” of the system will also be available with a wider range of capabilities such as hands-free driving “for periods of time,” Rivian said. Rivian said drivers will still need to pay attention to the road at all times.
The updates to its existing products come as the automaker tries to boost sales of key models before launching the less expensive “R2” models, which are expected to start at around $45,000 when they begin shipping during the first half of 2026.
Lower-priced vehicles are crucial to Rivian's expansion as sales of its existing models have slowed amid a slowing pace of industry-wide electric vehicle sales. The company has cut headcount, cut operating costs and retooled its Illinois plant to be more efficient in an effort to cut capital spending. It also temporarily halted construction of a new factory in Georgia, saving $2.25 billion.
Rivian stock has been under pressure, as the automaker continues to burn cash and report significant losses. Rivian announced a loss of $1.45 billion during the first quarter of this year.
Its shares are down nearly 50% year to date.
Rivian said deliveries of the 2025 R1S and R1T models will begin immediately.
The California-based company will continue to offer three motor configurations – dual, triple and quad – as well as standard, large and maximum battery packs, with top ranges of 270 miles, 330 miles and 420 miles respectively.

Rivian said prices for the second-generation R1S SUV will increase by $1,000 over current models to start at $75,900, with high-end three-motor models starting at about $106,000. The starting price for the R1T will remain the same at $69,900 but is $100,000 higher for the triple engine. The company did not announce specific prices for the four-engined cars.
Updated battery packs will continue to use the 2170 cylindrical cell, but the pack shell now uses large high-pressure die castings to simplify the manufacturing process and reduce mass.
The three- and four-motor vehicles include new drive units made by Rivian. The advanced four-wheel drive will now deliver up to 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 pound-feet of torque when in launch mode and accelerate from 0 mph to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. That's up from 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque.
The vehicles also feature more luxurious and updated interiors as well as a completely redesigned software interface, Rivian said. Charging times have also improved, with all vehicles able to add up to 140 miles of range in about 20 minutes.
Correction: The Rivian Max battery pack has a range of up to 420 miles. The large battery pack has a range of up to 330 miles. An earlier version of the article misstated the ranges.
