Secret Service Director Kimberly Shettle resigned Tuesday after widespread outrage over her agency's failure to prevent an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month.
Cheatle's resignation, as first reported by NBC News citing sources, came a day after she was sharply criticized by members of a House committee during a hearing into the Secret Service's actions leading up to Trump's July 13 rally in Butler.
At that hearing, Cheatle refused to resign, saying she was the most qualified person to head the Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting the president, vice president, their families and leading presidential candidates.
Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, narrowly escaped being killed in the shooting by 20-year-old Thomas Crooks. One rally attendee died in the shooting, and two men were seriously injured.
Unknown assailants shot Trump from the roof of a building about 150 yards from the podium where Trump was speaking.
