OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT chatbot, was founded in 2015 by a number of researchers, academics, and entrepreneurs, including Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Elon Musk.
Altman and Brockman remain at OpenAI, where they serve as CEO and president, respectively. Musk left in 2018. At the time, OpenAI said Musk left to avoid conflicts of interest with his other company, Teslawhich has increasingly focused on artificial intelligence. Since then, OpenAI has grown to become one of the leading companies in the development of artificial intelligence.
OpenAI gained notoriety in late 2022 after releasing ChatGPT, a chatbot that can answer user questions in a human-like manner. The company also has tools that can generate images and videos from text prompts. OpenAI now reportedly generates $3.4 billion in annual revenue and has notable clients including PwC, Moderna, and Estée Lauder. Microsoft has invested around $13 billion in the AI startup.
