The social media giant announced an update to its political ad policy on Monday, extending its ban on new political ads to last Tuesday, the original end date of the restriction period.
Meta did not specify the day on which the restrictions would be lifted, saying only that the ad ban would continue “until later this week.” The company did not mention the reason for extending the period for restricting political ads.
The company announced in August that any political ads that ran at least once before October 29 would still be allowed to run on Meta services in the final week before Election Day. Other political ads will not be allowed.
Regulation with eligible ads will have “limited editorial capabilities” while the restriction remains in place, Meta said. These advertisers will be allowed to make scheduling, budget and bidding changes to their political ads, Meta said.
Meta enacted the same policy in 2020. The company said the policy is in place because “we recognize that there may not be sufficient time to challenge new claims made in ads.”
