Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced that the Israeli leader will undergo surgery on Sunday for a hernia.
Netanyahu's office said that the hernia was discovered during a routine examination, and that the prime minister will be under full anesthesia and unconscious during the operation.
The office said Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a confidant who also holds the title of deputy prime minister, will serve as acting prime minister during the process.
Netanyahu (74 years old) adhered to a full schedule throughout the war that Israel has been waging against Hamas for nearly six months, and his doctors said that he was in good health.
But doctors admitted last year that he had masked a long-known heart problem after they implanted a pacemaker.
