Germany's harmonized consumer price index fell to 2% in August, less than analysts had expected, preliminary data from the German statistics office Destatis showed on Thursday.

On a monthly basis, the Harmonized Consumer Price Index fell by 0.2%.
Eurozone and EU inflation readings are standardised to ensure comparability.
Core inflation, which excludes energy and food costs, was 2.8% year-on-year, down slightly from 2.9% in July. The statistics office data showed a 5.1% annual decline in energy costs in August.
