shares eBay It rose 8% on Wednesday dead It said it will allow some listings to appear on Facebook Marketplace, its popular platform that connects consumers to local item pickups and more.
EBay stock has reached its highest level since November 2021.
Meta said in a statement that the rollout will begin with testing in Germany, France and the United States, where buyers will be able to view listings directly on Marketplace and complete the rest of their transactions on eBay.
The partnership could provide a boost to eBay's marketplace business, which has struggled to compete with e-commerce rivals such as Amazon, WalmartTemu, and even Facebook's own marketplace platform that allows users to buy and sell items.
EBay has recently embraced niche categories like collectibles and luxury goods to try to keep buyers and sellers coming back to its site. CEO Jimmy Iannone told CNBC in an October interview that shoppers were coming to the site, known for its used and refurbished goods, looking for discounts amid a rocky macroeconomic environment.
Meta's move is an attempt to appease the European Commission, the EU's executive body, after the regulator fined the company €797 million ($821 million) in November for linking its Marketplace product to the main Facebook app.
At the time, the commission said Meta's bundling of Marketplace with Facebook could mean competitors were effectively “blocked out” given the extent of the platform's distribution. Facebook has more than 3 billion users worldwide.
The commission also said Meta imposes “unfair trading terms” on other online classifieds providers who advertise on its platforms, particularly Facebook and Instagram. She added that these terms allow Meta to use data generated from other advertisers for Marketplace.
Meta appealed the ruling at the time, saying it “ignores the realities of the booming European market for online classified listing services.”
“While we disagree with the European Commission’s decision on Facebook Marketplace and continue to appeal it, we are working quickly and constructively to build a solution that addresses the points raised,” the company said on Wednesday.
EBay touted its integration with Facebook Marketplace as a way for the e-commerce site to “increase exposure for our seller listings, both on and off eBay, as part of our strategy to engage buyers and deepen customer loyalty.”
In 2023, Facebook announced a similar partnership with… Amazon It allows users to browse and purchase products without leaving the app.
